How to be More Environmentally Sustainable at Home in 2022

We’ve all heard about the importance of protecting our environment - driving less, using reusable shopping bags, recycling, etc. In a world where there is an increasing amount of offices going to remote work, how can you make your work from home lifestyle more environmentally friendly?

SAVE ENERGY AT HOME

Cutting down the energy usage in your home is not only beneficial for the environment, but also for your wallet. Using natural light as much as possible, shutting off the heat when you’re not home, hand washing dishes, skipping the heat dry cycle on your dishwasher and unplugging unused electronics can cut down on nearly half of your home’s utility bills.

Saving water is another great way to save energy at home including shutting off water when you’re brushing your teeth and washing your face, taking shorter showers and washing your laundry in cold water.

GO PAPERLESS AT HOME

Over 45% of paper in an office is discarded within a day, so working from home is already a step in the right direction, but how can you go one step further and implement a paperless home? Here are some ways to go paperless at home:

  • Take notes on your phone or electronic devices
  • Convert your personal bills (phone, banking, utility) to online billing
  • Remove yourself from mailing lists to decrease the amount of paper advertisements
  • Take photos of important documents, rather than printing, if you don’t need a physical copy
  • Use an e-reader, rather than buying physical books

BE MORE SUSTAINABLE IN THE KITCHEN

On average, every year humans waste 1.3 billion tonnes of food – enough to feed 3 billion people. Being more conscious of our food waste, consumption and storage can make a massive impact on our environment, along with a massive reduction in waste.

When grocery shopping, purchasing food products that are compostable and biodegradable ensures that you are avoiding filling landfills with more waste. Also using eco friendly storage solutions such as glass containers to store food can help keep foods fresher, longer to avoid excess food waste.

When purchasing produce, look for organic and/or locally grown foods to support more sustainable farming and delivery practices. Cleaning your household with natural cleaning products also helps the environment by avoiding chemicals spreading to the atmosphere and seeping through the drain.
